What drew me to this idea was my own Christian background and a desire to really understand the women in the bible better. There are so few women featured and almost never from their point of view, so I thought it would be helpful to study them individually and in depth! I also wanted to shine a light on some women characters in the Bible that maybe don't get enough credit and retell some traditionally "male" stories from a female perspective.
But first things first - what exactly is a Badass Biblical Women? This storybook will feature the stories of three prominent Biblical women - Bathsheba, Judith, and Ruth. Initially this seems like a pretty diverse line up of women. While Ruth is a pretty lauded biblical figure, Bathsheba is best known for bathing on her roof, and Judith's story isn't even in most Bibles. So why make them BBWs? Because the point of highlighting Women in the Bible isn't about highlighting only the one's who behead generals or give birth to Nations. It's about emphasizing the diversity of women throughout the Bible. They don't all have to be perfect or sinless - the men certainly never are - they have to be complex. And these women were certainly that!
A little taste of our first BBW Bathsheba:
The story of Bathsheba is, like most stories in the Bible, mostly the story of the men she's involved with. In this case, it's King David who sees her bathing on a roof, sexes her up (with or without consent) gets her pregnant and then kills her husband to hide his infidelity before marrying her.
